Mariners playing Plink-O

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Fig Jam

It’s either plink-O or they are just throwing darts at a roster to decide how to handle personnel decisions.  How else can you explain designating Norton for assignment?  How? He only has 16 AB’s and in those 16 AB’s he has 7 hits (.437).  What indicates that he is the problem with the Mariners offense?  The guy has performed when given the chance this season.  There are a number of other players who should have gone before him.

Designating Wilkerson makes more sense.  I wonder if Bavasi has to write an apology letter to the ownership group for wasting so much money for basically nothing.  Wilkerson had a 3 million dollar deal.  Ouch.

Sager Bombs

Spring Game attendance stats, from here and here:

South Carolina: 31,125, Tennessee: 28,898, Mississippi State ($5 charge): 10,000, Ole Miss ($10 charge): 28,311, LSU: 33,624, Kentucky: 8,500, Georgia: 19,874, Florida: 61,000, Alabama: 78,200 (this was down 15%), Arkansas: 40,200 Auburn ($5 charge): 35,000

Washington: 9,000, WSU: 900, USC ($10 charge): 22,000, UCLA: 15,052, Stanford: 2,000, Oregon: 14,107, Arizona: 4,000, Arizona State: 5,000

OSU plays this weekend and Cal has no spring game.  I can’t find numbers on Vandy anywhere, but they can’t be worse than the 900 WSU brought out.  There’s no need to average them out anyway.  I’m ready to accept the scientific conclusion that Pac 10 spring game attendance sucks horse balls.

Why aren’t spring games as big a deal on the west coast?  It makes me sad that less Husky fans go to a free game than people at Mississippi State are willing to pay.

The Double Standard… falling off a Roof

Fig Jam

There is a  tiny article in the Seattle PI today reporting that WSU football player Andy Roof has been arrested and charged with 4th degree assault after Roof reportedly head butted a man who would not let Roof into a party in Pullman.  The article states that alcohol was involved.

This little piece would not have caused me much concern were it not for an article published less than a month ago by PI Sports columnist Jim Moore, the “go2guy.”  On April 4 Moore wrote a column entitled, “WSU’s Roof gets Serious, Sober.”  The article detailed how after 3 alcohol related arrests and being kicked out of WSU for fall semester of 2007, Roof had turned things around and was back at WSU, and back on the football team.  The piece was extremely positive and painted Roof as a comeback kid of sorts.  A guy who let drinking control his life for a while, but who has seen the error of his ways and was making the most of his second chance.

Guess what Ronaldo’s been doing back in Brazil?

  • a) Re-habbing
  • b) Looking for his next team
  • c) Spending time with his wife & son
  • d) Boy-girls!

Ronaldo

If you guessed d) - you’re right! Nothing like a little Sunday night hook-job action in Rio.

Tacoma Bombs prep for callup

(Remember: Bombs = Mariners; it’s regional slang)

I’m on record as a Brad Wilkerson hater. I don’t care much for Turbo Vidro or Richie Sexson either. Needless to say recent rumblings that at least Wilkerson and Vidro are playing for their jobs comes as more than welcome. Something’s about to go down.

Jeff Clement is on his way up.

Happy Chris Polk Day!

Nobody told me about this, but I’m happy to join in. Both dailies ran stories today on highly touted pre-freshman UW receiver Chris Polk. Polk, you may recall, initially signed with USC before spurning them when inspired by the football gods to help restore the glory of Washington.

(Polk in red)

Or maybe it was because he knew he could play at UW right away. Whatever.
