Sager Bombs
So the M’s choked away another one last night, giving up runs in the 10th AND the 11th. So now they’re 13-16 and 4.5 games back already.
The M’s are 1-8 in 1-run games. Yikes. That epic 2001 team? They went 26-12 all season. That means only 23% of their games were decided by one run, while right now almost a third of the M’s games have been that close. You can point to smaller sample size, but I’d say it sure looks like a symptom of decent pitching and shit offense.
Want to get more frustrated? This incredible post at the always awesome Lookout Landing examines in detail the multiple times the M’s have broken your heart this year. Some of them are iffier than others, but if you take last night, Felix’s 8-inning gem, the Tori Hunter home run rob, and somehow losing 8-7 to the Orioles after being up 5-0, it’s an entirely different season. The M’s are 17-12, this week’s callups and DFA’s never would have happened (don’t kid yourself), and the team would be about 1000 times less depressing.
Instead, we have a Mariners team that is… really fucking depressing. And sadly, I think the record is a fairly accurate reflection of the talent. The record in 1-run games has to balance itself out at least a little (only Atlanta, at 0-9 has a worse record in them, and even the worst teams in 1-run games didn’t lose them at this clip) but the early performance is not of a team that looks in any way, shape, or form like a playoff contender. It looks like last year’s team with a corrected record and place in the standings. And more Miguel Cairo.
At least the new fish burritos at Safeco sound good. Oh, and Griffey is probably 3 home runs away from being available. Fuck.
