Sonics strike gold in hypothetical second round

Constable Echelon

Sick of weighing the merits of Jerryd Bayless and Brook Lopez yet? Me too. But the gaping chasm between the top two picks of the draft and the rest of the field mustn’t dissuade us from baseless pontificating.

I’m talking mock drafts. I’m talking mock draft analysis. And NBADraft.net has the Sonics stocking up rock solid rotation players in the second round. Joey Dorsey much?

With the 32nd pick of the 2008 NBA Draft, the Seattle Supersonics select Joey Dorsey, Memphis.

If Dorsey falls this far, then it proves that NBA GMs have learned nothing since Carlos Boozer inexplicably fell out of the first round in 2002. Like Boozer, Joey Dorsey was on tv seemingly every other night dominating the paint. He is a proven vital component on a winner, and a beast athletically. He is the answer to the question: What if Jason Maxiell was two inches taller? And conventional wisdom has Robin “my brother’s the talented” Lopez going comfortably in the late first round. GMs really upset me sometimes. I would take Dorsey with our pick at 24 (if he were still there) in a heartbeat.

With the 43rd pick of the 2008 NBA Draft, the Seattle Supersonics select Bill Walker, Kansas State.

NBADraft.net gushes: “An absolutely jaw dropping, electrifying dunker capable of getting air like the greatest dunkers of all time, Jordan, Dominique, Vince Carter, Josh Smith etc. … His leg strength and explosiveness is off the charts …” They list Walker’s NBA comparison as Ruben Patterson. You know who was really good? Ruben Patterson. (Sorry, nannies.) Plus Bill Walker is the all time sidekick. He was OJ Mayo’s boy in high school and Michael Beasley’s boy at K-State. He is comfortable around greatness, but more importantly he is a freak athlete.

With the 50th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, the Seattle Supersonics select Anton Ponkrashov, Russia.

No, I don’t know anything about this guy. He’s a 6′7″ pg who’s still quite young. If any of this were actually going to happen he would be stored away in Russia for a few years to develop I would assume. Let’s move on.

With the 56th pick of the 2008 NBA Draft, the Seattle Supersonics select Bryce Taylor, Oregon.

I love Bryce Taylor. In four years at Oregon his lowest scoring average was 9.3 points. Two years ago he averaged 14.1 ppg while shooting over 50% from the field. Where Malik Hairston (who I also grew to enjoy) entered flapping his gums, Taylor just showed up and produced from day one. He will stick on an NBA roster.

In four hypothetical picks the Sonics hit three home runs in my eyes. If they can manage to somehow corral Joey Dorsey and Bill Walker in the second round, this draft will be a giant success. In real life they’ll trade the picks away for future second rounders just like the did last year with Carl Landry (slaps forehead). Sam Presti has designs on having every single pick in the second round by 2015, success of the team be damned.

Alert! Bill Walker moved up to the Kings at #43. Sonics now use#46 to select Trent Plaisted from BYU. Sonics become significantly less athletic.

(PS - Chad Ford has Bill Walker going in the first round)

Another guy to take a chance on would be Patrick Ewing Jr.

Why do you love Oregon players? Why? Your Oregon basketball crush is inexplicable.

Sometimes I don’t even understand it. I look at them as individuals I guess.

Where is this post on the site? I can’t find it anywhere but in the recent comments link.

It should be front and center.

It’s on the second page, right under your Elitism Trumps Obesity post.

Did you hear about the two cell phone towers that got married? The ceremony was nothing special, but the reception was excellent!
