Former Mariner All-Stars
What could have been…
The Mariners are unwatchable. I don’t even go when I have free tickets, nor do I turn on FSN. With the exception of Felix, who can we watch and get excited about?
All of these Mariners have been let go over the past few years. In return, we got poop. Don’t you wish we still had some of these guys, instead of, I dunno, Jose Vidro?
Starting Pitchers: Jorge Campillo, Jamie Moyer
Released by the Mariners after the 2006 season, Campillo (5-4, 2.78 ERA) has earned a regular spot in Atlanta’s rotation after starting out in the bullpen.
Moving on to Moyer (9-6, 3.78 ERA): He’s made all 21 starts this season, eating up 121 innings, while earning a reasonable $6 million. Plus, his wife was awesome. You can’t tell me that Batista, Silva, Washburn, or that piece of shit we got from the Braves can replace Jamie Moyer.
Relievers: George Sherrill, Rafael Soriano
Comments: All the Mariners are trying to do this year is see how many appearances Sean Green can make before his arm falls off a la Rob Nenn. Sherrill (30 saves, $980k) and Soriano (1.65 ERA, $2.65 million) would have come in handy.
You could also throw Brian Fuentes into this list - he was sacrificed in the disastrous Jeff Cirillo trade.
Catchers: Yorvit Torrealba, Miguel Olivo
Comment: Could have bridged the gap until Clement was ready to take the job or Johjima’s contract expired. Umm…never mind.
Infielders: Asdrubal Cabrera, Greg Dobbs, Carlos Guillen
Comments: In Philadelphia, Dobbs (.313, 3 HR, 21 RBI) has evolved into one of the best pinch-hitters in baseball.
Cabrera impressed last season for the Indians and was just recalled to Cleveland’s the Major League roster. Meanwhile, we have Willie Bloomquist and Miguel Cairo, the latter being paid $850k to motivate Jose Lopez.
Guillen was traded in 2004 for Ramon Santiago.
Outfielders: Adam Jones, Shin-Soo Choo
Comments: I won’t beat the Adam Jones horse - USS Mariner is all over that. Shin-Soo Choo, on the other hand, probably wouldn’t be able to hold a roster spot for the Mariners since he still can’t hit lefties.
What’s the point of this post? None, probably. Just more evidence that the Mariners could have a solid team if they actually believed in playing young kids.
