The Idiocracy of Sports Call-In Shows

Listening to the post-game show after the M-Bombs’ epic collapse against the Los Angeles Angels of my Ass, some call-in douche dropped this gem on the listening audience (paraphrased):

“Uhhh…I think if you get paid that much money, you should throw strikes. I mean, shit, you should throw strikes. Since you make so much money. You look at what these guys are earning and they can’t even throw strikes. Bells and balls. Throwsomefuckingstrikes!”

He is, of course, referring to David Aardsma’s collapse in the ninth inning. You know, the guys FOURTH APPEARANCE IN FOUR DAYS! You don’t think that maybe had something to do with his inability to throw strikes?

Anyone who uses this argument — or any form of it — is an idiot. Except for the NBA regular season, athletes try. They try really hard. And when they are in between the lines, their bank accounts are not going to help them get that shot by the defender. Or get the fastball over the strike zone.

This is more a reflection of the caller’s unhappiness with his own salary/lot in life/general unhappiness than anything else.

God knows you can shit on athletes for any number of things. Because they are often idiots. But faulting a guy for answering the bell when his arm is completely dead, and then blaming his performance on his salary? That’s the height of idiocracy.

And that is NOT what the body craves.

I will reference the Nuggets beat down of the Supes on 3/16/08. After a 168-116 shellacking the Nuggets players commented after the game, “That’s what happens when you don’t try in the NBA.”

Also when I caught a game against the Griz courtside with Floyd, he remarked at how much he missed a high level of competition (CWU ftw!). Note this was a meaningless game between two lottery teams. Floyd was talking about how you have to go as hard as you can every second or you are going to get flat out punked.

The argument that NBA players don’t try in the regular season is as stupid and uninformed as anything you’re accusing sports radio callers of. Leave that shit to people on sports radio, so we can keep the high ground.

    (Dick joke)

There is a pretty good Stanhope bit on a somewhat similar subject. I decided to look it up. The sports related bit starts at 4:55. There is also a excellent bit about smoking cigarettes before that if you got an extra five minutes.

It’s a reference to a low budget yet moderately compelling Luke Wilson vehicle.

Constable: Wait, so to refute my claim of NBA players not trying in the regular season you are going to cite…an example of NBA players not trying in the regular season?

Your logic is flawed, good sir.
