Pink(slip) Floyd

Reportedly, Tim Floyd has resigned as head coach of the USC basketball program.  This comes as no surprise.  In fact, really good odds are that if Floyd didn’t go ahead and resign from his post at USC, that the University would have been forced to fire him, for cause, due to that little ‘paying players handlers cash in order to ensure they come play for USC’ fiasco that he has found himself in.

Personally, I won’t miss Floyd at all.  He always came across as a jerk and a guy who had no handle on his emotions whatsoever.  I’ve made my position on Floyd pretty clear though, so I guess it’s predictable that I’d take a little bit of enjoyment out of this development.  He just always lacked the class and charisma that some of the other Pac-10 coaches like Lute Olson (before he went batshit crazy retired) and Mike Montgomery have.

With his resignation, Floyd wraps up a year where he took a USC team with 2 first round NBA draft picks and 2 borderline professional players to the second round of the NCAA tournament (overachiever!), where he gave an impassioned speech to his players to stay at USC and fore-go the NBA draft, only to turn around a few weeks later and flirt with the Arizona coaching position, and where he saw allegations surface that he literally handed money over to OJ Mayo’s manfriend  personal representative in order to ensure that Mayo attended USC.   Well played Mr. Floyd, well played.

Few have done less with more, yet still managed to somehow fail upwards, than Floyd. Dude’s the GWB of coaching. The USC gig is arguably more attractive than the Arizona one since there won’t be the corpse of Olsen micromanaging every move. I would have rather Floyd’s worthless ass had stuck around longer and kept underachieving.

This is pretty disappointing for me. I actually enjoyed Floyd’s tirades on the sidelines. I also enjoyed that he was really good at recruiting, but really mediocre at coaching, though Paul Shirley would beg to differ.

When I read the headline of this post, I though H&F was beginning to report on the jobs of Northwest mortgage brokers. Glad to hear that isn’t the case and that at least one Floyd still has a job…
