Tuba Guy, You Will Be Missed

November 4th, 2008

Manny Faces

Sometime between Sunday Night and Monday Morning, beloved Seattle icon, Tuba Guy, passed away.  He had been the victim of beating and robbery on October 25th which left him with head wounds and he was at home after a stay at the hospital.  Tuba Guy was a fixture in Seattle sports.  Any game you went to, even Storm games, would have that familiar plodding sound as you neared the stadium or arena.

Not only was he adept at the tuba, but he was also the inventor of the Tuba Guy Dance, which, according to him, he invented “sometime around 1985.”  To a casual observer, the dance simply looked like a man marching in place.  Upon closer examination, one could truly see the intricacies of his movement.  Looking at his feet you could see that this man is truly tuba to the bone.  His feet would lift up and down in the same plodding style as his tuba playing - never waivering and always on tempo.  Fast or slow, no matter what the song, Tuba Guy would make the dance work.

The Best College Basketball Game You’re Not Supposed To Know About

November 2nd, 2008

Sager Bombs

So while the football Huskies were busy getting the living bejesus kicked out of them in southern california, the Husky hoop squad faced their first big test of the season.  Yes, Wyoming traveled to Seattle to take on the Dawgs in a nice little non-conference battle.

What, you didn’t hear about this?  Oh wait, you’re not supposed to.

Welcome to the secret world of NCAA scrimmages, the alternative to playing D2 squads as a way of prepping for the regular season.  In 2004 the NCAA mandated that college teams only play against other college teams.  No more games against Athletes in Action or the EA Sports All Stars (for UW, those games weren’t necessarily free wins anyway).  Many coaches are now scrimmaging other D1 teams instead of lining up a slate against smaller programs.  That’s totally within the rule so long as there are no stats kept and no crowd.

But shit.  Look at who played this weekend besides the UW/UW tilt!  Davidson at Texas?  Vandy at UNC?  Nevada at Saint Mary’s?  I’d probably sneak a peek at all 3 of those games (and the Davidson game would be damn near appointment viewing).  Oh well, I guess when you’ve got an organization that’s as well run as the NCAA you sometimes need to take your lumps with inane rules like these.  The UW-Western Washington game will be open to the public!

Fideo Friday: Happy Halloween

October 31st, 2008

The day celebrated by women as National Dress Like A Stripper Day has arrived. Many of us also celebrate this day as Dress As Offensively As Possible Day, nobody take my UW Man On Fire Costume. Halloween is also a time for pranks, sometimes legendary ones. This next video demonstrates a reasonable way to react to any tricksters.

Meet Your Newest Husky: Abdul Gaddy

October 29th, 2008

Manny Faces

Thanks to Lute Olsen’s stroke-induced dementia and Romar’s all-around classiness, the University of Washington will be welcoming Abdul Gaddy into the 2009-10 recruiting class. Gaddy is the #2 rated point guard in the country and the best in-state recruit, averaging 23 ppg and winning State Player Of The Year. Gaddy announced he will sign a letter of intent with UW once the signing period opens on November 12. With this and Ty resiging, it finally feels like the sun is beginning to shine on Montlake.

Best video ever?

10.28.08 Pac-10 Football Podcast - Ty Willingham Resignation Spectacular

October 28th, 2008

Hello blawg fans!

It’s ovah, Kenny! It’s ovah! Ty Willingham “resigned” as football coach of the University of Washington effective at the end of the season. Lane Kiffin. Chris Peterson. Jim Mora. Pick your horse. This development actually lets us venture back into weary optimism regarding the hapless Dawgs. Longterm that is.

Oh, and there were games! USC outlasted Arizona 17-10 in Tucson. Oregon demolished ASU in Tempe behind their relentless ground attack. And Cal used a big 4th quarter to distance themselves from the Kevin Craft show against UCLA.

You took the high road Ty! Now go on the road…to USC, where the Dawgs will attempt to cover a 43 point spread. Oregon and Cal meet in the annually interesting Tedford-Bellotti clash. And WSU travels as 30 point road dogs against Toby Gerhart and Stanford.

But Ty’s gone. That’s the story.

Skank to Darius Miles: “How Come You Ain’t Got No Jumpshot?”

October 28th, 2008
By Morristache

There’s no better way to lead off an NBA column than with a Darius Miles anecdote - and this is a good one. Several years ago in Portland, Ore. a woman approached Darius at a club and had the following exchange:

Woman (in smooth voice): Hey Darius baby.
D-Miles (in equally silky voice): Hey mama, what’s up?
Woman: How come you ain’t got no jumpshot?
D-Miles: (silence)

If a woman wearing a skank top and six-inch heels makes fun of your jumper, maybe you should get out of the NBA. Just a thought.

Let’s get this NBA Season Preview started!!

Scott Woodward and Mark Emmert address Husky Nation

When things get this low I’m not above cheering for someone else’s failure.  And the firing of Ty, along with the Aubrey McClendon margin call, are the two highlights of the 2008 Seattle sports year.
